Martina Hendry

Martina’s beekeeping journey began in the Czech Republic, where she grew up surrounded by her grandpa’s bees. While her initial fascination was all about eating honey, her passion has since evolved into managing 30 colonies as a weekend hobby alongside her full-time job.

Martina is passionate about rearing and working with locally adapted bees, striving for traits as close to the dark Apis mellifera mellifera (AMM) as possible.

Markets – love them or hate them?

Key takeaways

  • Markets are an effective way to sell honey and bee products while educating the public about bees and supporting local communities
  • Starting small with basic setup is recommended to test whether market selling suits your business model
  • Product presentation, variety, and visual appeal are crucial for attracting customers at markets
  • Food hygiene registration requirements vary by local authority; beekeepers should contact their council for clarification on primary producer exemptions
  • BBKA insurance covers pure beeswax products like candles but not infused honey or products with additives
  • Gift sets, different honey sizes, and seasonal decorations help increase sales at markets
  • Having proper equipment including card payment machines, gazebos with weights, and adequate lighting is essential for successful market trading
