Steve McGrath

Steve first took up beekeeping in his teens in Yorkshire, helping an experienced beekeeper with his seasonal tasks including moving hives up to the North York Moors for the heather. Family and a career in journalism and content in London then got in the way, but Steve returned to the apiary in 2021 and quickly developed a passion for treatment-free beekeeping and raising dark AMM bees. He believes these are key to the long-term sustainability of beekeeping in the UK.

Steve currently has around 30 colonies on the Kent/Sussex/Surrey borders, running a semi-commercial operation that raises its own bees and doesn’t import. He also runs the Westerham Beekeepers’ bee breeding apiary, which is focused on developing a stock of treatment-free, near-native bees that will benefit all club members and help improve the stock in the wider area.
